...In the Imperial Diet elections in 1990, when legal activities were permitted, the party quickly became the largest party (19.7%) in terms of vote share. In September of that year, when the Anti-Socialist Law expired, the party changed its name to the Social Democratic Party of Germany, chose a leadership centered on Bebel and Paul Singer (1844-1911), and in the following year, 1991, adopted the Erfurt Program, which was clearly based on Marxism, in preparation for new legal activities. After that, despite various legal and social restrictions, the party grew into a mass political party, as evidenced by the fact that its membership grew to 385,000 in 1905 and 1,085,000 in 1913.
