Johannes I Tzimisces
925‐976
Emperor of the Byzantine Empire. Reigned from 969 to 976. He was a military nobleman of Armenian origin who conspired with Empress Theophano to assassinate Nikephoros II and ascended to the throne. He regained the former Bulgarian Kingdom that had been occupied by Prince Sviatoslav Igorevich of Kiev, making the area south of the Danube part of the Empire (971), and successfully expanded the territory of the Empire by invading Mesopotamia, Syria, and Palestine. He married his niece Theophano to Otto II, avoiding a break with the Holy Roman Empire (972). [Wada Hiroshi]
