There are 10-12 pairs of lanceolate leaflets arranged opposite each other. The Japanese name comes from the fern-like leaf shape. From June to August, beautiful bluish-purple flowers bloom in dense cymes at the top of the stem, slightly downward-facing. The inflorescence has glandular hairs.
