…A perennial herb of the Polemonium family that rarely grows in the grasslands of the mountains of Kyushu (illustration). The stem grows upright from a short creeping rhizome, reaching a height of 50-100 cm. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound, alternate, and 15-20 cm long. There are 10-12 pairs of lanceolate leaflets arranged opposite each other. The Japanese name comes from the fern-like leaf shape. From June to August, beautiful bluish-purple flowers bloom in dense cymes at the top of the stem, slightly downward-facing. The inflorescence has glandular hairs. The corolla is funnel-shaped, gamopetalous, and has five deep radial lobes, 2.5-3 cm in diameter. The calyx lobes are the same length as the tube. …
