815-885 A Greek missionary who, together with his brother Cyril, evangelized the Slavs of Moravia. Archbishop of Sirmium (869). A native of Thessalonica, he gave up secular life and became a monk around 856. After his brother Cyril died in Rome (869), he was appointed Archbishop of Sirmium (now Sremska Mitrovica, Yugoslavia) with jurisdiction over Moravia and Pannonia by Pope Adrian II, who officially recognized the Slavic liturgy. However, due to various forms of oppression from the Frankish Church, his position as archbishop remained nominal. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
