A Greek missionary who, together with his brother Cyril, evangelized the Slavs of Moravia. Archbishop of Sirmium (869). A native of Thessalonica, he gave up secular life and became a monk around 856. After his brother Cyril died in Rome (869), he was appointed Archbishop of Sirmium (now Sremska Mitrovica, Yugoslavia) with jurisdiction over Moravia and Pannonia by Pope Adrian II, who officially recognized the Slavic liturgy. However, due to various forms of oppression from the Frankish Church, his position as archbishop remained nominal.

弟キュリロスとともにモラビアのスラブ人に布教したギリシア人宣教師。シルミウム大司教(869)。テッサロニケの出身で，856年ころ世俗の生活を捨て，修道士となった。弟キュリロスがローマで客死(869)したのち，教皇ハドリアヌス2世によって，モラビアとパンノニアを管轄区とするシルミウム(現，ユーゴスラビア領スレムスカ･ミトロビツァ)大司教に叙階され，スラブ語典礼を公式に認められた。しかし大司教の地位は，フランク教会のさまざまの圧迫にあって，名目的なものに終わった。
