Renfrewshire is the administrative capital of the county of Renfrewshire in the mid-west of Scotland. It is located about 10 km west of Glasgow and faces the White Cart, a tributary of the River Clyde. The town was founded around a monastery founded in the 12th century, and in the 18th century it became an industrial city centered on textiles, with linen production thriving. From the 19th century onwards, cotton spinning took over from linen, and the town developed into a global centre for cotton yarn production. Today, other industries and services include machinery, chemicals, food, microelectronics and computer systems. In the early 19th century, the town became famous for its paisley shawls, which were produced as imitations of Indian cashmere shawls. Although this patterned woolen fabric is no longer produced today, its unique pattern is widely used as a paisley pattern in Western clothing and other textiles. Population: 72,970 (2004 estimate).
