A British writer and humanist who represents 12th-century Europe. His English name was John. Born near Salisbury, he traveled to France and studied apologetics, grammar, rhetoric, and theology in Paris and Chartres. He studied under Abelard, William de Conches, and Gilbertus Polétanus, and was also friends with Bernard of Clairvaux. He served Thomas Becket and witnessed his murder in Canterbury Cathedral. He was in the midst of the academic and literary activities and social upheaval of the era, and became one of the leading figures in the 12th-century Renaissance.

12世紀ヨーロッパを代表するイギリスの文筆家，人文主義者。英名ジョンJohn。ソールズベリーSalisburyの近くで生まれ，フランスに渡ってパリ，シャルトルで弁証論，文法，修辞学，神学を学ぶ。アベラール，ギヨーム･ド･コンシュ，ギルベルトゥス･ポレタヌスに師事したほか，クレルボーのベルナールとも親交があり，T.ベケットに仕え，そのカンタベリー大聖堂での殺害を目撃するなど，この時代の学問･文芸活動および社会的激動のただ中に身を置き，〈12世紀ルネサンス〉の立役者の一人となる。
