Lantien man (English spelling)

A Chinese fossil human. A mandible and skull fragments were discovered in Lantian County, Shaanxi Province in 1963-64. Excavation was carried out by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and chopping tools and other artifacts were uncovered. It is believed to be 500,000 to 600,000 years old, older than the Peking Man found at the Zhoukoudian site.

The supraorbital ridge is extremely developed, with the two ridges continuing at the eyebrows. The skull narrows significantly behind the eye sockets. The head is low-set, and the brain volume is estimated to be small at 780 milliliters. The third mandibular molars on both sides are congenitally absent, which is extremely rare for this period. It belongs to the hominid stage, but is an older type than Peking Man.

中国の化石人類。1963～64年に陝西(せんせい／シャンシー)省藍田県で下顎(かがく)骨および頭骨破片が発見された。発掘は中国科学院によって行われ、チョッピング・ツール（敲打器(こうだき)）などが伴出した。時代は50万～60万年前とみられ、周口店遺跡の北京(ペキン)原人より古い。

　眼窩(がんか)上隆起が著しく発達し、眉間(みけん)で左右の隆起が連続している。眼窩の後方で頭骨は大きく狭まる。低頭で脳容積は780ミリリットルと推定され小さい。左右の下顎第三大臼歯(きゅうし)が先天的に欠如しているが、この時代のものとしてはきわめて珍しい。原人段階に属するが、北京原人より古いタイプである。
