Yonaguni Island is the westernmost island of Japan, located at the western end of Okinawa Prefecture, about 510 km southwest of Naha City, and belongs to Yonaguni Town. On a clear day, the mountains of Taiwan can be seen. The central hilly mountain range is made of Miocene sandstone and shale, with the highest peaks Urabu-dake (231 m) and Kubura-dake (188 m), surrounded by Pliocene Ryukyu limestone. A fringing reef has developed around the island. The main industries are sugar cane, rice farming, and fishing. Specialties include the traditional craft of Yonaguni weaving and awamori, such as Hanasaki. The island is also home to the giant moth Yonagunisan and the Ryukyu king pigeon, a natural monument.
