Folding screens are used in the ablution ceremony at Shingon Esoteric Buddhism temples. Literary sources show that from around the 10th century, folding screens were used as general furnishings at the Imperial Court and elsewhere, but gradually made their way into ablution venues, and by the 14th century they had already become important ablution tools. As if reflecting this process of transition, the few landscape folding screens that remain today are not uniform in both their depiction and the background behind their creation. One scroll (a national treasure) in the Kyoto National Museum was created in the late 11th century, and depicts an old hermit, paper and brush in hand, composing his poetic thoughts, along with the people who visit him, against a backdrop of an open water scene and a range of low mountains in the distance.
