Four bamboos - Yotsudake

One of Japan's traditional musical instruments. A bamboo percussion instrument made by splitting a thick bamboo into four pieces and carving them, holding two pieces in each hand and clapping them together like castanets. It is mainly used in folk performing arts, and also in dances such as monkey training, female tayu, and Sumiyoshi dance. In kabuki geza music, as with dance, it is used in scenes featuring door-to-door performers and street performers, as well as in scenes featuring poor homes in the back alleys of the downtown area.

日本の伝統楽器の一つ。竹製の打楽器で、太い竹を四つに割って削り、両手にそれぞれ二枚ずつ持ってカスタネットのように打ち合わせて鳴らす。主として民俗芸能において用いられ、さらには猿回しや女太夫(たゆう)、住吉(すみよし)踊などの舞踊に用いられる。歌舞伎(かぶき)の下座(げざ)音楽では舞踊と同様、門付(かどづけ)や大道芸人などの出る場面のほかに、下町の裏長屋などの貧しい家の場面に用いている。
