Togo's capital and port city. It is located in the southwest of the country, facing the Bay of Benin, a branch of the Gulf of Guinea. In 1897 it became the capital of German Togoland. In 1968, a deep-water port was completed in the eastern suburbs with assistance from West Germany. In addition to exporting domestic cocoa, coffee, copra, cotton, palm oil, and palm kernels, the city also handles some of the trade with Ghana and Burkina Faso. It is the starting point of three railway lines that run to Bassar and Kpalimé in the hinterland, and Anésho on the coast. It is blessed with limestone resources, a rare find in West Africa, and has a cement factory in partnership with neighboring countries. It is the political, economic, and cultural center of the country, and is home to the University of Benin and an international airport. Population: 750,757 (2010).
