Oyashio front - Oyashiozensen (English name)

The Oyashio and Kuroshio Currents meet off the coast of Tohoku, from Joban to Sanriku, and form three regions with different water mass characteristics: the Oyashio water area (approximately north of 40°N) made up of low-temperature, low-salinity Oyashio water, the Kuroshio water area (approximately south of 35°N) made up of high-temperature, high-salinity Kuroshio water, and the area between them where the Kuroshio water runs over the Oyashio water. The Oyashio front is a clear water temperature front that is the boundary between the area where the two water masses coexist and the Oyashio water area. It can also be said to indicate the southern limit of pure Oyashio water. Although it is a noticeable salinity front, it rarely appears as a density front because the contributions of water temperature and salinity to density cancel each other out. Therefore, the flow along the Oyashio front is only a weak eastward flow that is occasionally seen, which is different from the Kuroshio front characterized by the Kuroshio Extension.

親潮と黒潮は東北地方の常磐から三陸にかけての沖合いで出会い，異なる水塊特性をもつ3つの領域を形成する。すなわち，低温，低塩分の親潮系水から成る親潮水域 (ほぼ北緯 40°以北) ，高温，高塩分の黒潮系水から成る黒潮水域 (ほぼ北緯 35°以南) ，それらの間で，黒潮系水が親潮系水の上に乗上げるようにして両者が混在する領域，の3領域である。親潮前線とは，2つの水塊の混在する領域と親潮水域との境目にあたる明瞭な水温前線のこと。純親潮水の南限を示しているともいえる。塩分の前線として顕著であるが，水温と塩分の密度への寄与が打消し合って，密度の前線としてはほとんど現れない。そのため，親潮前線に沿う流れは弱い東向流がときたまみられる程度であり，黒潮続流で特徴づけられる黒潮前線とは異なっている。
