"Pilgrimage of the Six Paths of Pure Water and Pure Gentian"

The main scenes are "Kiyomizu-dera Scene" in which Seigen falls in love with Princess Sakura while carrying a bucket and falls down the stone steps, and "Hermitage Scene" in which Seigen, in torn clothes and a torn hat, is killed. A representative example is "Kiyomizu Seigen Rokudo Meguri" by Takeda Jizo and Namiki Osuke, which premiered in July 1762 (12th year of the Horeki era) at the Osaka Mimasu Daigoro Theater (the center theater). Seigen, played by Nakamura Utaemon I, was so amazing that it became the Nakamura family's family art and established the image of Seigen obsessed with love. In ancient times, there was the Tosa Joruri piece Itsushin Nigabyakudou (One Heart, Two Rivers, White Path), and in the Kabuki play with the same title by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, which premiered in 1698 (Genroku 11), as the title suggests, Seigen is depicted as being torn between the two paths of love and prostitution.

…手桶をさげた清玄が桜姫を見初めて石段から転げ落ちる〈清水寺の場〉や，破れ衣に破れ笠の姿になった清玄が殺される〈庵室の場〉が中心となる。代表的なものに1762年(宝暦12)7月大坂三枡大五郎座(中の芝居)で初演された竹田治蔵･並木翁輔作の《清水清玄六道巡（きよみずせいげんろくどうめぐり）》があり，初世中村歌右衛門の扮した清玄はものすごく，中村家の家の芸となるとともに，恋に執着する清玄像を確立した。古くは土佐浄瑠璃の《一心二河白道（いつしんにがびやくどう）》があり，同じ外題で1698年(元禄11)に初演された近松門左衛門作の歌舞伎では，外題の示すとおり，女色男色の二道に狂う清玄が描かれた。…
