A saint of the Eastern Orthodox Church and a Byzantine man of letters. Born and educated in Constantinople, he held various ecclesiastical offices there. He taught rhetoric at the Patriarchal School and wrote commentaries on the classics (Homer, Pindar) and interpretations (the Geography of Dionysius Periegetes). After 1175, he became metropolitan of Thessalonica. In addition to writing theological treatises on the monastic reforms he promoted, he also wrote a series of speeches, letters, and a book based on his own experiences, the Account of the Siege of Thessalonica, which describes the Norman occupation of Thessalonica in 85.

東方正教会の聖人，ビザンティン時代の文人。コンスタンティノープルに生まれ，教育をうけ，同地の教会諸職を歴任。なかでも総主教座付属学校で修辞学を教え，古典の注釈(ホメロス，ピンダロス)，釈義(ディオニュシオス･ペリエゲテスの地誌)を著す。1175年以後テッサロニケ府主教となり，自らが推進した修道院改革とかかわって神学諸論文を書いたほか，一連の弁論，書簡，また，自らの体験に基づいて85年のノルマン人占領を記す《テッサロニケ占領記》をのこした。
