...A community founded in Oneida, central New York, in 1848 by John H. Noyes (1811-1886), a religious believer who believed he had attained perfection through the Second Coming of Christ. It attracted about 300 followers (called Perfectionists), promoted self-governance by renouncing self-interest and mutual criticism, and its schools and products were highly acclaimed.
