...In Kabuki, Sawamura Sojuro III played Kinokuniya Bunzo in Satokotobaawase Kagami (written by Namiki Gohei, first performed at the Kiriza Theater in 1797), which was well received, and illustrations for reading books and other publications have since been drawn in his likeness. Also, Kibun Daijin Kuruwa no Irifune (written by Kawatake Shinshichi III, first performed at the Ichimura Theater in 1878) is an adaptation of a lecture by Hogyusha Torin based on a collection of volumes written by Tamenaga Shunsui II. Nagauta also has Kibun Daijin (written by Nakauchi Choji, released in 1911), and the book Honorary Choja Kan (date of creation unknown), and in popular legends the first generation's rise to wealth in one generation and the second generation's arrogance and downfall are depicted separately, making them typical of Edo townspeople.

…歌舞伎では《青楼詞合鏡（さとことばあわせかがみ）》(並木五瓶作，1797桐座初演)で3世沢村宗十郎が紀伊国屋文蔵に扮し好評を得，いらい読本等の挿画は宗十郎の似顔で文左衛門を描くにいたった。また《紀文大尽廓入船（くるわのいりふね）》(3世河竹新七作，1878市村座初演)は，前記2世為永春水作の合巻をもとに放牛舎桃林が講釈化したものの脚色。長唄にも《紀文大尽》(中内蝶二作詞，1911発表)，また実録本には《名誉長者鑑》(成立年不詳)があり，俗伝ではおおむね初世の一代富豪化と2世の驕奢･零落とが分けて描出され，江戸町人の一典型となっている。…
