Bantustan (English spelling)

An African self-governing region in the Republic of South Africa created by the South African government's policy of separate development. Under the Natives Land Act of 1913, Africans in the Federation of South Africa were segregated by tribe into reserves, which accounted for 9% of the national land area, and the Natives Trust Land Act of 1936 expanded the area to 13%, but the implementation of this was significantly delayed by the outbreak of World War II. In the 1950s, population pressure on the land in the reserves increased, and the government appointed the Bantu Community Economic Development Commission (commonly known as the Tomlinson Commission) to resolve this issue, and its report was submitted in 1955.

南アフリカ共和国政府の分離発展政策によってつくられた南ア共和国内のアフリカ人自治地域。1913年の原住民土地法により，南ア連邦内のアフリカ人は全国土の9％に相当する原住民指定地(リザーブ)内に部族ごとに隔離され，次いで36年の原住民信託土地法によってその面積は13％まで拡大されることになったが，その実施は第2次世界大戦の勃発によって大幅に遅れた。50年代になってリザーブ内の土地に対する人口圧が高まり，その解決を目ざしてバントゥー地域社会経済開発委員会(通称トムリンソン委員会)が政府により任命され，その報告書が55年提出された。
