A type of decorative technique for lacquerware. It is also called hei-datsu. There are two methods: one in which thin sheets of metal such as gold, silver, tin, or brass are cut into patterns and pasted on the lacquer surface, and another in which lacquer is applied over them and then the lacquer is either peeled off with a knife or ground away to reveal the metal sheet. Hei-mon is the Japanese name and hei-datsu is the Chinese name. It was introduced to Japan from the Tang Dynasty during the Nara period, and the fact that it was widely practiced at the time is known from the Shosoin treasures. From the Heian period onwards, it was used in conjunction with maki-e, and from the Muromachi period it came to be called kanagai.

漆器の加飾技法の一種。平脱(へいだつ)ともいう。金・銀・錫(すず)・真鍮(しんちゅう)などの金属の薄い板を文様に切り、漆(うるし)面に貼(は)り付けるものと、その上から漆を塗り埋めたのち漆を小刀の類で剥(は)ぎ取るか、または研ぎ出して金属板を現す方法がある。平文は日本名、平脱は中国名といわれ、わが国には奈良時代に唐から伝わり、当時盛んに行われたことは正倉院宝物によっても知られる。平安時代以後は蒔絵(まきえ)と併用され、室町時代からは金貝(かながい)の名称でよばれるようになった。
