A bird of the heron family in the order Ciconiiformes (illustration). Total length is about 38 cm. It is the smallest species of heron that inhabits Japan. The male is generally light yellowish brown or light gray brown, with black head and primary and secondary flight feathers. Females and young birds have clear chestnut-brown vertical stripes. It is distributed from eastern and southern Asia to Micronesia, New Guinea, and New Britain. It is a resident bird in tropical regions, but a summer bird in Japan, migrating in early May and breeding on riverbanks and marsh reed beds north of Kyushu. It is relatively rare to see them, but they sometimes fly slowly flapping their wings over the reed beds.

コウノトリ目サギ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約38cm。日本に生息するサギ類の中では最小種。雄は全体に淡黄褐色ないし淡灰褐色で，頭上と初列･次列風切は黒い。雌や幼鳥は栗褐色の縦斑がはっきりしている。アジアの東部，南部からミクロネシア，ニューギニア，ニューブリテン島まで分布する。熱帯地方では留鳥であるが，日本では夏鳥で，5月上旬に渡来し，九州以北の川岸や湿地のヨシ原などで繁殖する。見かけることは比較的少ないが，ときどきヨシ原の上をゆっくり羽ばたいて飛ぶ。
