A city in the eastern part of Kanagawa Prefecture. It is the prefectural capital. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and became a government-designated city in 1956. It was originally a deserted village on a sandbar in the waterfront of the Tama Hills, but it has developed rapidly since the opening of Yokohama Port under the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Japan in 1859. Along with Kobe, it is one of Japan's leading international port cities. It consists of 18 wards, including 10 wards (Tsurumi, Kanagawa, Nishi, Naka, Minami, Hodogaya, Isogo, Kanazawa, Kohoku, and Totsuka), as well as the newly established wards of Konan, Asahi, Midori, and Seya in 1969, Sakae and Izumi in 1986, and Aoba and Tsuzuki in 1994. The center of the city is the Kannai district, where government offices and companies are concentrated. Isezakicho, Motomachi, and Chinatown are famous as downtown areas. The coastal reclaimed land near Kawasaki City is home to large factories for steel, shipbuilding, chemicals, oil refineries, etc., and forms the center of the Keihin Industrial Zone. Large petrochemical factories have been established on the reclaimed land along Negishi Bay in the south, and Tsuzuki and Kohoku wards along the Tsurumi River have also become inland industrial areas with the establishment of large automobile and electronics companies. The city's total manufacturing shipment value was 4.103 trillion yen (2003), ranking first in the prefecture. The Minato Mirai 21 (MM21) project for the new 21st century city center has been underway since 1983 on the reclaimed land in the waterfront of Nishi-ku and Naka-ku, and in 1993 the Yokohama Landmark Tower and Nippon Maru Memorial Park were completed. The waterfront has also undergone major changes, with the opening of the Yokohama Bay Bridge between Daikoku and Honmoku Pier in 1989, Yokohama New Transit, Yokohama Minatomirai Line, and the Metropolitan Expressway. The city is served by the Tokaido Main Line, Shinkansen, Keihin Tohoku Line, Negishi Line, Yokohama Line, Keikyu Corporation, Tokyu Toyoko Line, Sagami Railway, and Tomei Expressway. The inland hilly areas have become Tokyo commuter towns due to the development of Kohoku and Konan New Towns, which have been undertaken by the Urban Development Corporation since 1965. Sojiji Temple, Shomyoji Temple, Kanazawa Bunko, Sankeien Garden, Nogeyama, Yamashita Park, Kodomo-no-Kuni, Yokohama National University, and Yokohama City University are among the attractions. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 437.49 km2 . 3,688,773 people (2010). → Related topics Kanagawa Prefecture | Kanagawa University | Kanagawa Magistrate | Yokohama Station Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
