A village in Higashiyamanashi County, northern Yamanashi Prefecture. Population 1,448 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Fuefuki River, National Route 140 (Chichibu Okan) passes through the village. Most of the village area is forest, and the cultivated land is on steep slopes and has been used mainly for mulberry orchards, but in recent years it has been used for fruit production such as grapes and floriculture. In addition, wild boars are raised and shiitake mushrooms and shimeji mushrooms are cultivated in connection with tourism. The northern mountainous area is designated as Chichibu-Tama National Park, and includes Nishizawa Valley and Hirose Dam upstream of the Fuefuki River, as well as Mount Kentoku on the Okuchichibu hiking trail. 山梨県北部,東山梨郡の村。人口1448(1995)。笛吹川上流域を占め,国道140号線(秩父往還)が通じる。村域の大部分が山林で,耕地は急傾斜地にあっておもに桑園に利用されてきたが,近年はブドウなどの果樹生産や花卉栽培へ移行した。また観光と結びついたイノブタ飼育やシイタケ,シメジの栽培が行われる。北部山岳地帯は秩父多摩国立公園に指定され,笛吹川上流の西沢渓谷や広瀬ダム,奥秩父ハイキングコースの乾徳(けんとく)山がある。
