A city in the southwest of Kochi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Facing Sukumo Bay, the city center, located on the alluvial lowlands downstream of the Matsuda River, was the former castle town of the Ando clan, a chief retainer of the Tosa clan, and is the center of the surrounding farming and fishing villages. In addition to rice, okra and broccoli are cultivated. Fishing for bonito on Okinoshima Island and sardines in Sukumo Bay have declined, and now the focus is on aquaculture of pearls, sea bream, and yellowtail. Construction of an industrial park and port development are underway. There is the Sukumo shell mound (historic site). 286.19 km2 .
