High-speed photography

Japanese: 高速度写真 - こうそくどしゃしん（英語表記）high-speed photography

A type of photographic measurement method that uses a very short exposure time to freeze fast phenomena and observe their instantaneous state. Exposure times are usually less than one thousandth of a second, and currently range from one ten-thousandth of a second to one ten billionth of a second. Broadly speaking, they can be classified as instantaneous photography and high-speed cinematography. The former involves taking one or several frames or taking multiple frames, while the latter involves taking tens or thousands of frames in succession, making it possible to reproduce phenomena at a slow speed. It is used in the study of destructive and explosive phenomena, and of high-speed moving objects.

非常に短い時間の露光で撮影し，速い現象を停止せしめて瞬間の状態を観察する写真的測定法の一種。露出時間は普通 1000分の1秒以下で，現在1万分の1秒から 100億分の1秒の範囲にわたっている。大別して，瞬間写真，高速度映画に分類できる。前者は1～数枚のコマ撮りないしは重ね撮り，後者は数十～数千コマ以上連続にコマ撮りができ，緩速度で現象を再現しうる。破壊や爆発現象あるいは高速度運動体の研究に用いられる。
