Mr. Yusa

A senior vassal of the Hatakeyama clan. He is said to have come from Yuza-go, Akumi-gun, Dewa Province (Yusa-cho, Akumi-gun, Yamagata Prefecture). He appeared as a steward for the Hatakeyama clan at the beginning of the Nanboku-cho period, and later played an active role as the deputy governor of Kawachi and Noto, which were sub-provinces of the Hatakeyama clan. The Yuza clan of Kawachi is known for the actions of Yuza Kuninaga around the time of Meitoku (1390-94) in the early Muromachi period, Yuza Kunisuke and Naganao in the mid-Muromachi period when Hatakeyama Yoshinari and Masanaga were in conflict, and Yuza Naganori in the Sengoku period. In Noto, too, Tsugumitsu Yusa and others held great influence during the Sengoku period, but were wiped out as Oda Nobunaga's rule spread. The Yusa clan, who followed the Hatakeyama clan, the Oshu Tandai, later served the Sendai and Nihonmatsu domains.

畠山(はたけやま)氏の重臣。出羽(でわ)国飽海(あくみ)郡遊佐郷（山形県飽海郡遊佐町）より出たといわれる。南北朝時代の初めに畠山氏の執事として現れ、その後は畠山氏の分国河内(かわち)や能登(のと)の守護代として活躍する。河内の遊佐氏としては、室町前期の明徳(めいとく)（1390～94）ごろに遊佐国長(くになが)、畠山義就(よしなり)と政長(まさなが)の対立する室町中期に遊佐国助(くにすけ)、長直(ながなお)、そして戦国時代に遊佐長教(ながのり)などの動きが知られる。また能登でも戦国時代に遊佐続光(つぐみつ)らが大きな勢力を誇ったが、織田信長の支配が浸透してくるなかで滅ぼされた。なお奥州探題畠山氏に従った遊佐氏は、のちに仙台藩や二本松藩に仕えた。
