Also known as amorphous metals. Metals that do not have long-range crystals in their atomic arrangement. Usually, solid metals are crystalline, but amorphous metals do not have a regular atomic arrangement. Since they are in a state similar to that of a liquid metal that has been cooled and solidified, they do not show anisotropy, are less susceptible to radiation damage, are stronger and more corrosion-resistant than normal metals, and some exhibit good properties as soft magnetic materials. They are made using methods such as liquid quenching, vacuum deposition, and electroplating. Full-scale development began around 1970, and amorphous alloys of metal-metal systems such as Cu-Zr and Ni-Nb, and metal-nonmetal systems such as Fe-B and Fe-P have been produced.
