Yokose Night Rain - Yokose Yau

Poet. His real name was Torahisa. His other names were Tonemaru and Hoko. He was born in Taiho Village, Makabe County, Ibaraki Prefecture (now Shimotsuma City). He suffered from spinal cord problems as a child and continued to write poetry despite the pain of rickets. He published masterpieces in the style of folk songs such as "Kami mo Butsuku mo," "Osai," and "Yaredaiko" in the "Bunko" magazine, and was called one of the three poets of the "Bunko" magazine along with Kawai Suimei and Irako Seihaku. In 1907 (Meiji 40), he joined the Shisosha Society, which was headed by Suimei, and also served as a judge for the new style poetry column of the "Joshi Bundan" magazine and a judge for the tanka column of the "Iharaki" newspaper (now the "Ibaraki Shimbun"), where he taught the younger generation, and in his later years he compiled historical facts from the early Meiji period. His style of poetry was based on the fixed 7-5 rhythm, and he left behind unique works that sang of the sadness of his own situation. In addition to the poetry collections "Yuzuki," "Hanamori," and "Twenty-Eight Inns," and the tanka collection "Joy of Death," his works include "Yoameshu," "Social Conditions in the Early Meiji Era," "Tengu Fuss," and "Dajokan Era."

詩人。本名虎寿(とらひさ)。別号利根丸(とねまる)、宝湖(ほうこ)。茨城県真壁郡大宝村（現下妻市）に生まれる。幼時、脊椎(せきつい)を患い、くる病の苦しみにさいなまれながら詩作を続け、『文庫』に『神も仏も』『お才』『やれだいこ』など民謡調の秀作を発表、河井酔茗(すいめい)、伊良子清白(いらこせいはく)とともに『文庫』三詩人の一人といわれた。1907年（明治40）酔茗主宰の詩草社に参加、また『女子文壇』の新体詩欄選者、『いはらき』紙（現『茨城新聞』）の短歌欄選者となって後進の指導にあたり、晩年は明治初期の史実編纂(へんさん)に及んだ。その詩風は七五調の定型を基礎とし、自身の境涯の哀感を歌い上げて独自の作品を残した。詩集『夕月』『花守』『二十八宿』、歌集『死のよろこび』のほか、『夜雨集』『明治初年の世相』『天狗(てんぐ)騒ぎ』『太政官時代』などがある。
