Around 1486 to 1561 Spanish painter and sculptor. Born in Valencia, former Castile. His father, Pedro B. (c. 1450-c. 1503), was active in Urbino, Italy, and was the founder of Castilian Renaissance painting. Alonso was also a Mannerist who studied in Florence and Rome from 1504 to 1517, and was the leading figure in 16th-century Spanish sculpture. His work is characterized by expressionistic depictions of tall figures with intense movement, and the strong, glossy, warm colors enhance this effect.
