Under the Taiho Code, labor was accumulated in the center, and the remainder after deducting the annual operating expenses was used to pay for food and wages for servants conscripted from all over the country, and various projects were carried out. 〘名〙① 雇って使うこと。雇われて役目に従事すること。また、その役目。※制度通（1724）九「神宗熙寧中に、王安石のはからひによりて、差役の法を改めて雇役とす」〔宋志‐食貨志上五・役法上〕② 令制で、強制的に行なわれた雇用労働。大宝令では庸を中央に集積し、毎年の経常費を差し引いた残りで諸国から徴集した役丁(えきてい)の食料、功賃にあて、諸事業を実施した。〔令義解（718）〕
