937‐964 Pope of the Roman Empire. Reigned 955-964. Son of Alberich II, Duke of Spoleto. Thanks to his father's efforts, he became pope at the age of 18 in 955, but due to his lack of experience he was manipulated by clever politicians both in and outside Rome, and the authority of the papacy weakened. In 962, he crowned Otto I emperor and received the Ottonian Charter in return, but the following year he was dismissed after it was discovered that he had promoted anti-Ottonian policies. As soon as Otto left Rome, he convened a church council and was reinstated as pope, but died suddenly three months later. [Konno Kunio] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
