Pope of the Roman Empire. Reigned 955-964. Son of Alberich II, Duke of Spoleto. Thanks to his father's efforts, he became pope at the age of 18 in 955, but due to his lack of experience he was manipulated by clever politicians both in and outside Rome, and the authority of the papacy weakened. In 962, he crowned Otto I emperor and received the Ottonian Charter in return, but the following year he was dismissed after it was discovered that he had promoted anti-Ottonian policies. As soon as Otto left Rome, he convened a church council and was reinstated as pope, but died suddenly three months later. [Konno Kunio]

ローマ教皇。在位955‐964年。スポレト公アルベリヒ2世の子。父の尽力で955年18歳で教皇に就任したが，経験不足からローマ内外の巧妙な政治家たちに操られ，教皇の権威は衰えた。962年オットー1世に皇帝戴冠を行い，返礼として〈オットーの特許状〉を得たが，翌年反オットー政策を推進したことが発覚して解任された。オットーがローマを去るや教会会議を召集して教皇に復位したが，その3ヵ月後急死した。【今野国雄】
