〘noun〙① A gap. A narrow space. Time. ※Jizo Jūrin-kyō Gangei 7th Year Chapter (883) 1 "A good residence is solid and strong. There is no time or gap (〈different reading〉 time), just as it is said." ※Joruri, Shinju Ten no Amijima (1720), 1 "The lattice is so sharp that it can be pierced easily." ② A small window used to look outside from the inside of a castle wall or tower , and to fire arrows, guns, or cannons. On ships, they are cut into the shield plate of the arrow tower of a military ship. There are arrow slits, gun slits, and cannon slits. [Meigoki (1275)] ③ Generally refers to a small window.
