Japanese: 環状剝皮 - かんじょうはくひ（英語表記）ringing

This is also called annular barking, and involves making shallow cuts 1/10 to 1/20 the diameter of the trunk or thick branches of fruit or flowering trees, and removing the bark in a circular pattern. Some of the carbohydrates assimilated in the leaves are translocated to the trunk and roots through the phloem, but when annular barking is performed to remove the phloem, this translocation is hindered, and the carbohydrate concentration increases above the barked area, making it easier for adventitious roots to form. For this reason, annular barking is often performed on branches when layering is performed. In addition, if annular barking is performed to increase the carbohydrate concentration of the branch, it will result in good flower bud formation, less fruit drop, and earlier ripening, but the amount of carbohydrates translocated to the roots will be reduced, and the tree will lose vigor.

果樹や花木の幹または太枝に直径の1/10～1/20の幅で浅く切り込みを入れ，樹皮を環状に除去することで，環状除皮ともいう。葉で同化された炭水化物の一部は師管を通って幹や根へと転流してゆくが，環状剝皮を行って師管部を除去すると，転流がさまたげられるので，剝皮部よりも上方では炭水化物の濃度が高まって，不定根が発生しやすくなる。このため，取木を行う場合には枝に環状剝皮を施すことが多い。また環状剝皮を行って枝の炭水化物濃度を高めると，花芽の形成が良好となり，落果が少なく，熟期も早くなるが，根への炭水化物の転流量が少なくなるので樹勢が衰える。
