1893‐1979 Ecuadorian politician. Born in Quito, he worked as a lawyer and university professor before running for president as a candidate for the Conservative Party in 1934 and winning. He served as president five times until 1968, but only completed one term. In 1935, the year after he first became president, he was ousted in a military coup, and he founded the Democratic Union and consolidated his power in cooperation with the Communist Party and the Socialist Party. In 1944, he overthrew the Liberal Party's Arroyo government and was re-elected, deepening his confidence as a caudillo politician. An impassioned orator, he captivated the masses with his famous line, "Give me a balcony and I will govern," and was re-elected in 1952.
