Japanese: 用水路 - ようすいろ（英語表記）irrigation canal

An artificial waterway for transporting water for agricultural or urban use. In general, it refers to a waterway for agricultural irrigation. In this case, the waterway from the water source is called the main waterway, the one that branches off from it is called a branch waterway, and the waterway along cultivated land is called the smallest waterway. They are constructed with attention to points such as increasing the flow rate of the waterway to expand the irrigation area by passing through high ground and to reduce sediment in the waterway. They are important for the development of poorly irrigated areas such as alluvial plateaus, alluvial fans, and the foothills of volcanoes. The Tamagawa Canal on the Musashino Plateau, the Nasu Canal in Nasuno, and the Meiji Canal near the Yahagi River are primarily intended to obtain drinking water, while the Biwako Canal and the Aichi Canal are examples of multipurpose canals for agriculture, industry, drinking water, and power generation, and the Toyokawa Canal and the Kagawa Canal are examples of agricultural canals.

農業用水や都市用水を移送するための人工の水路。一般には農業用灌漑用水のための水路を意味することが多く，この場合，水源からの水路を幹線水路，それから分岐するものを支線水路，耕地に沿う水路を最小用水路という。高所を通過させて灌漑面積を拡大し，水路の沈殿物を少なくするために，水路の流速を大きくするなどの点に留意して建設される。水利の悪い洪積台地，扇状地，火山の裾野などの開拓には重要な意義をもつ。武蔵野台地の玉川上水，那須野の那須疏水，矢作川付近の明治用水などは飲料用水を得る目的が強く，農業・工業・飲料用水，発電などの多目的の用水路としては琵琶湖疏水，愛知用水などが，農業用水路としては豊川用水，香川用水などがある。
