An insect belonging to the family Tettigoniidae in the order Orthoptera of the class Insecta. It prefers to live on shrubs in forests and gardens, and males make a clear, clear sound at night, "swiitchon, swiitchon." It was named after the sound it makes, which is said to be similar to the sound a horse coach makes when chasing a horse. It is also commonly called "Switchyo." It is found in Honshu and south.

The body length from head to wing tip is 28-36 mm. The whole body is bright green, but there is a thick dark brown band from the head to the back of the prothorax, and a brown area is part of the sound organ at the base of the male's forewing. The forewings are wide in males and narrower in females. The sound organ is oval-shaped. The tibiae of the forelimbs and middle limbs are lined with long spines, making them suitable for preying on small insects for food. The female's ovipositor is somewhat broad and sword-shaped. They emerge once a year, and adults can be seen from summer to autumn. They are nocturnal, and the larvae are also carnivorous. The closely related H. unicolor has invaded from the south and is found in the warm areas of Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku, and the Ryukyu Islands.

昆虫綱直翅(ちょくし)目キリギリス科に属する昆虫。林や庭などの低木上を好み、雄は夜間澄んだ張りのある発音で、スイーッチョン、スイーッチョンと鳴く。この発音のようすが、ちょうど馬子(まご)がウマを追う声に似ているというので名づけられた。俗にスイッチョともいう。本州以南に分布する。

　頭から翅端までの体長28～36ミリメートル。全身が明るい緑色であるが、頭から前胸の背面にかけて濃褐色の太い帯があり、雄前翅基部にある発音器部の一部に褐色部分がある。前ばねは、雄では幅広く、雌で細めである。発音器は楕円(だえん)形。前肢(ぜんし)、中肢の脛節(けいせつ)には長い棘(とげ)が並び、餌(えさ)の小昆虫を捕食するのに適した形態になっている。雌の産卵管はやや幅広い剣状。1年に1回発生し、成虫は夏から秋にかけてみられる。夜行性で幼虫も肉食性。本州の暖地や九州、四国、南西諸島には、近縁のタイワンウマオイH. unicolorが南方から侵入し生息している。
