Pipefish - Pipefish (English spelling)

Japanese: ヨウジウオ(楊子魚) - ヨウジウオ(英語表記)pipefish
Pipefish - Pipefish (English spelling)
A fish of the family Syngnathidae in the order Syngnathidae (illustration). This fish has a long, slender body, covered with ring-shaped bony plates that run from front to back. Its snout protrudes like a tube, with a small mouth at the tip. Unlike the seahorses of the same family, its head does not curve away from the axis of the body, but extends straight out, and it has a tail fin. Syngnathus schlegeli is found along the coast of Japan south of Hokkaido, and inhabits seaweed beds in calm inland bays. Its body is dark brown, occasionally with scattered white spots. It is 30 cm long.
