… One of the known reforms in rowing technique is the Fairbairn style. It was advocated in the 1920s and 1930s by Stephen Fairbairn (1862-1938), who became a coach at Jesus College, Cambridge. He emphasized the movement of the blade and advocated rowing naturally and dynamically, which put him at odds with the traditionalists who emphasized the style and form of the time. Karl Adam (1911- ), a German rower, followed suit, adopting interval training and other techniques that emphasized sensation, and was successful with a rowing style that did not move the upper body, losing only once in an international competition from 1958 to 1968. …
