He became familiar with ancient Greek literature from an early age, and after publishing his first collection of poems, Astarte (1893), he published a collection of prose poems in the style of Greek classics, Les chansons de Bilitis (1894), which was well received. What further increased his literary fame was his novel in verse, Aphrodite (1896), written in the Alexandrian style. …
