A former town in Yuri County, located in the southwest of Akita Prefecture, in the middle reaches of the Koyoshi River. The main settlement is Maegou, and the Yuri Kogen Railway runs through it. The town's main industry is rice farming, and it also raises beef cattle. In March 2005, it merged with Honjo City, and the towns of Yajima, Iwaki, Nishime, Chokai, Higashiyuri, and Ouchi in Yuri County to become Yurihonjo City. 96.53 km2 . 6,162 people (2003). 秋田県南西部,子吉(こよし)川中流域を占める由利郡の旧町。主集落は前郷(まえごう)で由利高原鉄道が通じる。稲単作農業を主産業とし,肉牛の飼育なども行う。2005年3月本荘市,由利郡矢島町,岩城町,西目町,鳥海町,東由利町,大内町と合併し市制,由利本荘市となる。96.53km2。6162人(2003)。
