[Establishment and power base]
Before their accession, the House of Capetians had a history dating back to Robert le Fort (?-866), a nobleman from northern France who had migrated from the Rhine region. The second Count of Paris, Eude(s), fought against the Normans to defend Paris and became king of West Frankish France. Eude's reign (888-898) marked the beginning of a new era in two senses: the decline of the Carolingian monarchy and the establishment of a fiefdom (principauté).

The Rhine Vikings, who had been conquering the Rhine and Moselle basins since the 880s and plundering and destroying Xanten (882), Aachen, Cologne, Koblenz, Trier (883), and other cities, were annihilated near Leuven (Leuven) in 991 by the expeditionary force of Arnulf, King of Carinthia. …
