A spider of the family Zygidae (illustration). It builds a long, thin, pouch-shaped dwelling web both underground and above ground, and attaches the aboveground part to a tree or stone wall. This part is where it catches its precious prey, and if a fly or moth lands on it unknowingly, it will grab it from the pouch with its long, large fangs, drag it into the pouch and eat it. The length of this pouch-shaped dwelling web is usually 15 to 18 cm, but some are over 20 cm long. In English, spiders of this family are called purse-web spiders because of the shape of their pouch webs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
