A town in Shimohei County in eastern Iwate Prefecture. The Funakoshi Peninsula protrudes into the area, and the Yamada Line passes through Yamada Bay, with the main settlements of Yamada and Funakoshi at the back of the bay. In addition to salmon fishing, oyster and scallop farming is also popular. The town is part of the Sanriku Reconstruction National Park, and includes Oshima Island, Koyadori Beach, and Mt. Karo. 岩手県東部,下閉伊(しもへい)郡の町。船越半島が突出,山田湾,船越湾奥に主集落山田,船越があり山田線が通じる。サケを漁獲するほか,カキ,ホタテなどの養殖も盛ん。三陸復興国立公園に属し,大島,小谷鳥(こやどり)海岸,霞露(かろ)岳がある。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。262.81km2。1万8617人(2010)。
