A 20,934-line tragic poem by the English poet R. Browning. Published in 1868-69. A Florentine nobleman murders his wife and is executed. The work is written in the form of a series of "dramatic monologues," in which ten characters each give their opinion during the trial, and is a masterpiece that highlights the complexity and diversity of the incident and human psychology. The title "book" is an old parchment volume that Browning bought in town, in which the subject incident is described. The story is constructed by mixing multiple perspectives, just as gold and alloys are mixed to make a ring.

イギリスの詩人R.ブラウニングの2万0934行の悲劇詩。全4巻。1868‐69年刊。フィレンツェの貴族が妻を殺害し処刑される。その裁判で10人の登場人物がそれぞれ意見を述べる一連の〈劇的独白〉の形式をもち，事件と人間心理の複雑さと多様性を浮彫にした名作。題の〈本〉とはブラウニングが町で買った羊皮紙の古本で，その中に題材となったこの事件が述べられている。金と合金を混ぜて指輪を作るように，複数の視点を混ぜ合わせて物語を構成している。
