Tarakan [island] - Tarakan
A small island off the northeast coast of Indonesia's Kalimantan (Borneo). Rich oil fields were discovered in this area at the end of the 19th century, and large-scale mining was carried out by the Dutch. During World War II, it was an oil supply base for the Japanese military. There is an airport. The capital is Tarakan. 384 km 2 .
