Damascus is Latin for Damascus, and Arabic for Dimashq or al-Sham. It is an oasis city in the center of Syria (historical Syria), with the Qāsiyūn mountain behind it, the Ghūṭa forest on the southeastern outskirts, and the agricultural region of Hauran to the south.
