A village in Kita-Uonuma County, southeastern Niigata Prefecture. Population 6,605 (1995). It occupies the valley of the Sari River, a tributary of the Uono River, and the upper reaches of the Tadami River in the east, on the border with Fukushima and Gunma Prefectures. The Ueda Silver Mine was discovered in 1641 (Kan'ei 18), and as a result of development by the Takada Domain, a mining town with 1,000 houses appeared during the Genroku period (1688-1704), and flourished. As a result, each settlement in the Sari River valley prospered as an inn on the Ginzan Kaido road, but declined when the mines closed at the end of the Edo period. It also has a long history of hot springs, said to date back to the Nara period, and is known as the Yunotani Onsen Village, with a group of hot springs such as Oyu and Tochiomata.
