Theorikon (English spelling)

Theorikon (English spelling)
In ancient Greek, it meant "admission to the theater." In Athens, it was an allowance paid by the state to poor citizens on the occasion of public festivals. It was introduced by Pericles in the mid-5th century BC. In the 4th century BC, it formed an independent financial department as a "fund" with a specialized corps of financial officials. The amount paid was roughly equivalent to one day's living expenses. Later, all surplus funds in the state finances were diverted to it, and it was distributed to all citizens, literally functioning as the "glue of democracy." However, with the Macedonian occupation of Athens, this system was abolished.
