Union Minière [Company] (English name)

Founded in 1906 through a joint venture between Belgium and Britain, Union Minière du Haut‐Katanga is the largest mining company in the Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Its official name is Union Minière du Haut‐Katanga. It was granted exclusive mining rights in the vast Katanga Province (now Shaba Province) until March 1990, and has steadily grown since. Not only has it developed large-scale mining resources such as cobalt, copper, and other minerals, but it also controlled most of the companies in Katanga, exerting a dominant influence on the Congolese economy.
