This is an anti-traditional art form that was personally developed by the ancient Egyptian reformer Akhenaten, based on the principles of his faith in the Aten, and occupies a unique position in the history of Egyptian art. While traditional Egyptian art adheres to highly stylized forms of expression in order to express the timeless essence of the Aten, this form is characterized by naturalistic and realistic expressions, such as the expression of momentary movement and free depictions of nature. The collection mainly consists of items discovered in the new capital, Akhetaten (Amarna), but also includes artifacts excavated at Thebes (Karnak and the tomb of King Tutankhamun).

古代エジプトの宗教改革王イクナートンが，その信奉するアテン信仰の原理に基づいて，自ら指導育成した反伝統的傾向の濃い芸術で，エジプト美術史上特異な地位を占める。伝統的なエジプト美術が，時間を超えた永遠の本質を表現するため，きわめて様式化された表現形式を遵守しているのに対して，瞬間の動きの表現や自由な自然描写など，自然主義風･写実主義風な表現を特色とする。新都アケトアテン(アマルナ)発見のものを中心とし，テーベ(カルナックやツタンカーメン王墓)出土品も含まれる。
