Heibonsha is a publishing company founded by Shimonaka Yasaburo in 1914. After publishing the 60-volume Collection of Modern Popular Literature in the early Showa period, the company established a reputation as an encyclopedia publisher, publishing the 28-volume Encyclopedia from 1931 to 1935. After World War II, the company published the World Encyclopedia, National Encyclopedia, and the new World Encyclopedia, edited by Hayashi Tatsuo, and the monthly magazine Taiyo from 1963, the Toyo Bunko series, the paperback series Heibonsha Library from 1993, and Heibonsha Shinsho from 1999.
