Colt was the founder of Colt's Patent Fire Arms Co. (now Colt's Manufacturing Company LLC), the largest firearms manufacturer in the United States alongside S&W (Smith & Wesson). He was born in Hartford, Connecticut. He became a sailor at the age of 16, and patented a unique revolver during a voyage to the East Indies. In 1836, he manufactured the Paterson Model percussion revolver. He subsequently designed and manufactured various revolvers and revolving rifles, including the Walker (1847), Dragoon (1848), Navy (1851), and Army (1860). His company's production soared during the Civil War (1861-1865) and the Western expansion era, and it grew into the largest firearms company in the United States. It continues to manufacture various pistols, rifles, and machine guns to this day.
